Why Authenticity is Required to Grow a Network

Authenticity is a buzzword used often in business culture, but not quite well-understood. Network Lead Exchange explains authenticity and how this concept is critical for network growth.

The idea of authenticity is something people largely define as being true to oneself. The reality is authenticity is more complex than the Shakespearian idiom indicates. Authenticity is easy to spot, but hard to manifest. The reason is when a person is authentic, it shows. It’s hard to fake when someone is who they say they are. When people are faking it, the signs are there. It’s easy to spot. That’s why it’s important to be authentic; the key to being authentic is simply reflecting what’s inside without fear of it being rejected.

People Innately Trust Authenticity

The reality of authenticity is the innate trust built through it. Everyone in business should apply the principle of “trust, but verify.” That said, it’s impossible to verify everything. Instead, people in business verify the people they’re not sure about and trust those who are authentic. Part of building this authenticity is doing what’s promised. When meeting people, if they’re conveying who they are and what they do, it will naturally fall into place.

Words Have Meaning

The best part about authentic people is when they speak, their words carry immense weight. They’re not putting any unintentional words into the space. Instead, if they say something is going to happen, it will. Furthermore, if they speak their opinion, the person listening knows it’s fully formed. Authentic people speak with certitude, but not with aggression. An aggressive approach is indicative of someone aching to be believed. Believing authentic people is simple because they leave no room for doubt.

Actions, Not Words

The key to authenticity is the action. Words matter, but actions are where authenticity is minted. Be a person following up on their words. Act in respectful, helpful ways. These simple ideas motivating actions are powerful ways to burnish the authentic reputation. Through helpful, mindful acts, people see a person who is truly committed to helping others. In turn, their trust is what grows the relationship. Authenticity’s relationship to action is something non-negotiable. One can’t exist without the other.
